Russell Simmons has announced that he is releasing a documentary series on Hip Hop history titled, The Definitive History of Hip-Hop. It will be chronicling the timeline and evolution of the beloved genre’s 40-plus-year history and is set to begin production sometime this year. Simmons took to instagram to make the big announcement. Himself plus all of Def Digital will team up with Stephen David Entertainment and GroupM Entertainment to bring the idea for the series into fruition.
“Hip-hop began in the Bronx and Queens, and was fueled by pioneering new artists with an incredible hunger to express themselves in unimaginably bold new ways,” Simmons said in a statement. “The Definitive History of Hip-Hop is the untold story of the birth of this art form – the series gets behind the scenes of what drove the beats, the rhymes, the ideas — and the people — that so powerfully hit a chord with all of youth culture in America and around the world.”
The documentary will start at the very beginning and lead up to where we are now in hip hop celebrating the trailblazing icons who contributed so much along the way.
“It starts with the OGs of this disruptive force in entertainment, spotlights some of the lesser known artists who’ve fallen out of history or favor, and of course looks at the icons who are now household names whether you’re in L.A. or London, Toledo or Tokyo,” says Simmons
While there is no set date yet Russell promises this will be the best thing yet so stay tuned!

Working with award winning filmmaker STEPHEN DAVID TO PRODUCE AS GOOD A VERSION OF THE TRUTH AD HUMANLY POSSIBLE. LOTS OF HISTORY HAS BEEN LEFT OUT. WHILE ALL THE ICONS ARE STILL ALIVE WE NEED DOCUMENTATION OF THEIR CONTRIBUTION. Hip hop was born in the Bronx and in Harlem. And moved to the 5 boroughs then it took over the world. I want to celebrate all the great artists who gave so much.
